Tana French - Broken Harbor (Dublin Murder Squad #4)
Broken Harbor is a place of dark memories for detective Mick ‘Scorcher’ Kennedy, now a top detective with the Dublin Murder Squad. When he and his rookie partner are offered a high-profile case in the recently renamed development, he readily accepts the assignment unaware of how the past will insinuate itself into his case.
I was hesitant about the author’s ability to make Scorcher a likeable character, as I came into this novel with preconceived notions about him, having first glimpsed him with a minor antagonistic and slightly pompous role in Faithful Place. (Another great read). I’m happy to admit that my assumptions were wrong. Sure, Mick is a strong-willed, play by the rules kind of guy, stubborn, or rather completely focused on solving a crime, but we see a tender side to the hard-boiled exterior he’s groomed through the years. I liked Mick before the end of the first chapter, and his voice works perfectly with this book as it unfolds.
Tana French not only gives us a great blueprint for a police procedural, but also allows us deep into the psyche of a man conflicted between loyalty to values, ideals, and truth.
If you’re looking for an action packed, high-adrenaline read, you may not enjoy this, but if you’re interested in discovering the whys behind a multi-layered investigation, from both the perspective of the law and the victims, with a few good twists, this is a definite read.
Already looking forward to the next book, and even more curious to see which character will step into the spotlight.
